About Authentic America™

Authentic Cultural Heritage and Natural Sites, Festivals-Events, and Tours

AuthenticAmerica.com is dedicated to raising awareness of cultural heritage as an innovative way to enhance and sustain the distinctive sites and resources of a destination – its people, structures, traditions, architecture, craft, performing arts, cuisine, heritage, artifacts, landscapes, and festivals.

What do you consider special about the community where you live or the places you visit? Is there an iconic landmark, a cultural event, an historic Main Street, or perhaps even a local diner that are significant showplaces to help distinguish your corner of the world from all others on earth? Do you seek out these special, authentic sites when you travel? If so, you’ve come to the right site – but we need your help.

AuthenticAmerica.com is a portal for saving and sharing these historic, cultural, and natural sites – and their related programs, events and activities. Often operated by non-profit organizations, these real places have significant needs – especially now, with the impact of COVID-19 – requiring substantial investment for stewardship and sustainability. Our goal is to help these sites and events be around for future generations to experience.

Why focus on authenticity? “Authenticity and Quality” became the first guiding principle when the National Trust for Historic Preservation started its heritage tourism initiative in 1989. As the first director of the National Trust program, I recognized its importance in setting one site apart from all others. Today, more than three decades later, authenticity resonates with even greater importance as the world becomes more homogenized. Valued by local residents, these places are increasingly important to cultural and heritage visitors desiring a distinctive experience. To ensure these authentic places, traditions, crafts, and events can open or reopen/reschedule in the future, support is needed now.

I founded this site to provide an easy way for managers of these sites and events to share their stories, convey their campaigns, and offer opportunities for giving as well as touring. Please browse the listings and see how you can help sustain these important places. And if you know of an authentic site or event, submit the information now for inclusion. – Cheryl Hargrove
